Who Am I?

I'm Josh Preston. I homeschooled my three kids for three years. It was messy, imperfect, and one of the best decisions I've made as a parent.

Before homeschooling, I was skeptical. I worried about everything: can I teach? Will my kids be socially awkward? What if I mess it up? But we took the leap, and it changed our family.

Why We Homeschooled

We didn't homeschool for religious reasons. We did it because our oldest was struggling in traditional school — not academically, but emotionally. She was anxious, unhappy, and we were fighting about school constantly.

One day I asked: "What if we just pulled her out and tried homeschooling?"

Within weeks, she was happy again. The anxiety lifted. We were all learning again. So we kept going.

What I Learned from Three Years

• The right curriculum changes everything. A good program makes teaching effortless. A bad one makes you both miserable. Finding the fit is 80% of the battle.
• You don't need to follow it exactly. Programs are guides, not scripture. Skip what doesn't work. Modify what needs changing. Your kid's learning beats program perfection.
• Homeschooling can be affordable. $500–$1000/year is totally possible if you're intentional. Yes, some programs are expensive, but you don't need them all.
• Socialization is not the problem everyone says it is. Homeschoolers have MORE opportunities for genuine relationships because activities are voluntary.
• Every family homeschools differently. Classical, Charlotte Mason, unschooling, traditional — find what works for YOUR family. There's no one right way.
• You don't have to be a teacher. You're a facilitator who learns alongside your kids. That's actually *better* than being the expert.

Why Homeschool Ranger Exists

After we finished homeschooling (my oldest went to public high school by choice), I realized something: curriculum information is everywhere, but it's confusing and often biased.

Every review site seemed to either love everything or hate everything. No one was just honest.

So I started Homeschool Ranger. To give honest reviews from someone who's actually used these programs with real kids. No paid reviews. No agenda. Just truth.

My Philosophy

• No paid reviews. If a company pays me, I'll disclose it. But I won't lie about a bad product for money.
• Affiliate transparency. Some links pay commission (at no extra cost to you). I'd recommend these programs anyway, paid or not. See full disclosure.
• Different kids need different programs. I try to tell you WHO each curriculum is for, not whether it's universally "best."
• Every program has trade-offs. Perfect curricula don't exist. I'll tell you the real pros and cons.
• Honest over popular. I'll say unpopular things if they're true. Sometimes the trendy program isn't the right fit.
